Inquests Hearings

The Inquests into the deaths of Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt will begin on 12 April 2021 at the Old Library, Guildhall, 71 Basinghall Street, London EC2V 7HH.

The Inquest of Usman Khan will begin on 27 May 2021 at the Old Library, Guildhall, 71 Basinghall Street, London EC2V 7HH.

Third Pre-Inquest Review Hearing and Public Interest Immunity Application Hearing

The third Pre-Inquest Review Hearing will be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice in Court 76 on 25 March 2021. The hearing is being held to address (1) claims for public interest immunity made by the Secretary of State and West Midlands Police, (2) an application for anonymity, (3) case management issues including whether accredited members of the press should be permitted to see those witnesses who have been subject to orders that they be screened. The open part of the hearing will start at 10am.

Taking into account the Government guidance regarding Covid-19, the Coroner has directed that the hearing will be partially a remote hearing in which Interested Persons and their lawyers may join by way of a two-way live video and audio link. There will be no video broadcasting of the proceedings to press, public, or others via a live channel. Instead, an audio-only broadcast of the proceedings will be facilitated, to which the press and public may request a link from the Solicitors to the Inquests.

Second Pre-Inquest Review Hearing

The second Pre-Inquest Review Hearing will be heard at the Old Bailey in Court 1 on 12 February 2021. The hearing will start at 2pm. Taking into account the Government guidance regarding Covid-19, the Coroner has directed that the hearing will be partially a remote hearing in which Interested Persons and their lawyers may join by way of a two-way live video and audio link. There will be no video broadcasting of the proceedings to press, public, or others via a live channel. Instead, an audio-only broadcast of the proceedings will be facilitated, to which the press and public may request a link from the Solicitors to the Inquests.

The first Pre-Inquest Review Hearing will be heard at the Old Bailey in Courts 9 and 10 on 16 October 2020. The hearing will start at 11am. Taking into account the Government guidance regarding Covid-19, the Chief Coroner has directed that the hearing will be partially a remote hearing in which Interested Persons and their lawyers may join by way of a two-way live video and audio link. There will be no video broadcasting of the proceedings to press, public, or others via a live channel. Instead, an audio-only broadcast of the proceedings will be facilitated, to which the press and public may request a link from the Solicitors to the Inquests.

First Pre-Inquest Review Hearing

The first Pre-Inquest Review Hearing was due to take place on 24 April 2020. This was vacated because of the Covid-19 pandemic and a written Ruling and Directions have been produced to address a number of applications and matters of case management which would have been addressed at that April 2020 hearing. The first Pre-Inquest Review Hearing will now take place on 16 October 2020 in Court 1 at the Central Criminal Court, London.
